Angel Wings Tattoo: Spiritual World Meets the Ink World

Regardless of your religion, stories of angels are part of your reality. Over 80% of the world’s population believes in angels. They are some of the things that make up human nature.

When I think of angels, I imagine celestial beings maneuvering through the world and our lives, guiding and protecting us. But where did this idea come from? And why do so many people have an angel wings tattoo?

In this article, we are going to take a look at some of these questions, followed by some of the best angel wings tattoo designs. Why dream of angels when you can engrave them onto your skin forever? So let’s get this spiritual party going and read all about these divine beings.

Origin & History of Angels

In order to understand the meaning of Angel wings tattoo, we must first look at angels in general. The word “angel” derives from the Greek word “angelos,” which means messenger. Angelos is also found in the first Christian bible and is a direct translation from the Hebrew Bible “mal’akh” which also means messenger.

See, our present-day mainstream representation of angles is largely based on Judeo-Christian beliefs. Let’s see what do they stand for specifically:

  • Angels deliver messages: A story in the Old Testament or the Hebrew Bible tells how three men were sent by God to deliver a message to Abraham. The message was that his thought-to-be barren wife Sarah will have a child.
  • Angels manifest everything: Besides being messengers, they do virtually everything. It is believed that they even control the movements of the planets and stars. Angels represent the hands of God and travel between Heaven and Earth to carry out His work.
  • Countless angels: According to the Book of Daniel and Revelation, there are thousands and thousands of angels. Theologians say that thousands don’t do justice and that there are an astronomical amount of angels above us.
  • Hierarchy of angels: The Hierarchy consists of nine levels, which are grouped into three spheres. The top sphere includes the Cherubim, the middle the Virtues and Power, and the bottom ones the angels and archangels.
  • Seven archangels: The Book of Tobit talks about each archangel having a certain role to fulfill. For example, Raphael is the guardian angel sent out to protect people in their struggles. Gabriel is the messenger angel and he is the one that gave Mary the news of her baby Jesus.
  • Angels are associated with light and fire: In the Book of Daniel, angels are described as having faces like lightning, with eyes like flaming torches.
  • Fallen angels: Angels are subject to falls. We are pretty familiar with the Abrahamic fallen angels. Lucifer, Satan, or Iblis was once a beautiful angel but fell because of his pride. Theologians believe that the fallen angels illustrate the corruptibility of the soul from pure to impure. Because of his pride and ego, Lucifer gets cast out of Heaven.
  • The battle of angles: The Bible also talks about the end battle between the good and bad angels. This can be understood as the battle within the individual soul, the good vs bad conscience. This internal struggle is often imagined as an angel and a demon sitting on each of our shoulders. Some even tattoo half angel half demon tattoos to express their inner struggle between the good and the bad.

What Is the Meaning of Angel Wings Tattoo?

The meaning of an angel wings tattoo is as subjective as planning a custom tattoo design — each person experiences it differently. Still, some points remain the same, such as the fact that wings are a direct representation of guardian angels and the divine connection to God.

One may experience an angel wings tattoo as the ability to fly in the higher dimensions of spirit. They are an indication of a level of spiritual advancement and the ability to anchor the higher divine light of the angelic and celestial realms into the physical.

Angelic wings may also represent that you are ready to fly towards the next level of your purpose. Your wings are supportive of your vision towards a better self. In some ways, an angel wings tattoo is like an extension of your aura and can protect against detrimental energies and negativity that may be thrown at your way.

Angel Wings Tattoo Designs

Each person experiences and feels the divine energy in a different way. Everyone has their own special connection to God that others may or may not understand — such as the case of putting an angel wings tattoo. Still, that shouldn’t be the reason for you to conceal your tattoo, because only you can decide what’s right for your body. That being said, let us see how does an angel wings tattoo looks on the body. Some places tend to hurt more than others, but we can always use the body pain chart for reference. Enjoy.

Final Thoughts on Angel Wings Tattoo

The ancients did not have modern-day science to explain their observation of the world. Instead, they understood that everything is carried out by unknown invisible forces, or Gods.

Our modern understanding of the forces of nature, however, is described by the flux and flow of energy. It’s interesting to see what today’s physicists view as energy, the ancients imagined as Gods. Maybe people feel that flux and flow of energy when they get an angel wings tattoo, who knows. Maybe you can tell us by leaving a comment down below. Meanwhile, here’s another interesting article of mine — the meaning of San Judas Tadeo tattoo a.k.a the Patron Saint of Lost Causes.
