If it feels like everyone is getting Miyazaki Tattoos lately, it’s probably because they are. Most of us know someone who has a Ghibli tattoo, or knows a friend who knows someone at least. And when it comes to Ghibli or Miyazaki tattoos, few are finer than those done by Kimberly Wall at Black Rabbit Tattoo in Richmond, VA.
Badass Miyazaki Tattoos from Black Rabbit Tattoo
Just off the touristy Cary St. in Richmond, VA there’s a tidy little tattoo shop just next door to a butcher shop and a hair salon that jams out some very colorful, true to the inspiration tattoos. This is Black Rabbit Tattoo and if you’re a Miyazaki fan (Or really, a manga, comic, or cartoon fan) then this is the tattoo shop for you. Below are some examples of the very fine tattoo work that Kim Wall puts out– while the images here focus on Miyazaki films, Kim’s style stretches well beyond that. Check out these tattoos and see for yourself how amazing they are.
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Perhaps less-known compared to more mainstream Ghibli favorites like My Neighbor Totoro or Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service is still a classic Miyazaki film. This tattoo does the film justice by perfectly matching both the style and the color to create what looks like a single animation cell directly from the film.
Notice how clean those lines are, as well as the use of negative space around the outline of the character to help keep the image from feeling too dense– as well as to help her stand out from the background. First class work all around.
One of the more popular films among Miyazaki fans, Princess Mononoke makes for great subject material for tattoos. Again, Kim knocks it out of the park by delivering an instantly recognizable tattoo with fine detail and stunning color.
This piece features Moro and the Forest God, as well as the mask to help center and frame the piece. We think Kim does a great job choosing between black line and colored line work to deliver a rich tattoo.
Kim’s done several Princess Mononoke themed tattoos. If you want to see more, follow her on Instagram.
Howl’s Moving Castle
You don’t see too many of these… I mean, sure, every Miyazaki fan is going to have a favorite film, but it seems like Howl’s Moving Castle is always a runner up. Anyway, here’s a great Howl’s Moving Castle half sleeve.
My Neighbor Totoro
I mean, c’mon. You knew there’d be some Totoro in here. What kind of post would this be if we were hyping up a bunch of sweet Miyazaki tattoos and didn’t deliver one single Totoro? Well, here’s a beautifully stylized and simple one. Pretty sweet, right?
Wait, What About the Other Films? I Want More Ghibli Tattoos!!!
Whoa, hold on. You’ll find an absolute ton of amazing work over on the Black Rabbit Tattoo Facebook page. This post is just to highlight some of that work. As for other films, like what? Grave of the Fireflies? Do you know how sad you’d be if you had that tattooed on you? And what about Nausicaa? LOOK– you’re not wrong, this is just a peek. Go to their page and see what else they have to offer. But before you go…
Way More Miyazaki Tattoos
Like I said, we can’t list all of Kim’s awesome Miyazaki work here. There’s just too much. So we’re going to leave you with one of her Miyazaki sleeves that combines elements across multiple films. Then, if you still want more (We know you do), you can follow her on Instagram @bunnymachine.
